Lumenis Resurfx Laser for Scars and Stretch Marks and Photorejuvenation!

Lu for Scars and Stretch Marks and

The Resurfx non-ablative fractional laser emits precise columns of heat energy into the skin to stimulate new collagen growth and retexture the skin. The controlled heat laser delivery has been used for decades in dermatology to trigger the body to "repair" the skin, leading to collagen production. Stimulating new collagen production is the key to more radiant, youthful looking skin.
Non-ablative means the skin is not broken, so the resurfaced skin will not bleed or get infected during treatment or after, as it can with other technologies. Thus there is minimal downtime and risk. No required time to rest or heal means no social downtime. There may be some redness and swelling right after the procedure and the following few days.  You must wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun for a few days. You can reapply makeup the next day. A series of 3-5 sessions gives optimal results, done in 4-6 week intervals. Gradual improvement in tone may be seen as soon as a couple of weeks after the procedure, and benefits of collagen production start appearing after three months.

With the Lumenis M-22 platform, we can offer our "Photofabulous" treatments as well! This combines the benefits of IPL and Resurfx laser. The combination of these two modalities will address both tone and texture. By decreasing pigmentation and redness while simultaneously triggering collagen production, your skin will become more even in color and texture.
For your utmost comfort, we are going to have you arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment so that we can wash your face and apply a topical numbing cream. You may experience a warm or prickling sensation as the laser is applied to the skin, but the treatment should not be painful.
IPL and Resurfx laser are not for everyone. We can not treat over an active infection, inflammatory skin conditions, or skin cancer. Tanning beds must be avoided two weeks prior to treatment as well as extended sun exposure. We will not be able to treat you if you have fake tanner on unless you can completely exfoliate it off prior to your session. Some antibiotics must be avoided too. Patients with lupus and some other autoimmune diseases are not usually good candidates either.

Bioidentical Hormones for Menopause and Andropause

Everyday 3500 women enter menopause. Maybe more. Natural menopause usually occurs between the ages of 43 and 55, which means we could live half our life in menopause! Our hormone levels can start dropping 15 years before that, so we should not wait until we actually stop having menstrual cycles to seek treatment. And 20% of men are in andropause by the age of 50. The symptoms are not fun!! During this pandemic, the inability to go about our daily routine adds increase stress to our lives and can actually make our symptoms worse.

Menopause impacts 25 million women worldwide each year. We all know the symptoms.....hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings or depression, sleep problems, fatigue, brain fog and no sex drive. Those are just the ones I hear most commonly. Menopause is also associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, and osteoporosis. Men with low testosterone have the same risks and experience fatigue, depression, moodiness, loss of muscle mass, erectile dysfunction and low libido.

We need estrogen! It has 400 functions in the female body. Estrogen deficiency is a state of accelerated aging.  In a 2013 study, researchers estimated that over the past decade 18,600-91,600 postmenopausal women, ages 50-59 who have had hysterectomies may have died prematurely because they were not given estrogen!

WHY NOT?!

Well, in 1991 a large trial called the Women's Health Initiative was begun by the U.S. National Institute of Health. The study was stopped early due to a 41% increase in stroke, 29% increase in heart attacks, 26% increase in breast cancer and a 100% increase in the rate of blood clots. So all doctors were cautioned about hormone replacement in menopause, and to use the lowest dose possible to control symptoms and to only continue treatment for 5 years at the most. There were HUGE flaws in this study. The estrogen being given to women was synthetic, made from pregnant horse urine. These compounds have about 40 different estrogens, none of which bind to the estrogen receptors in our body correctly. Furthermore, some of these women were treated with artificial progesterone as well (progestins or medroxyprogesterone). Women on these synthetic progesterones had the highest rates of breast cancer. If you're taking synthetic hormones, then you are exposing yourself to these risks. Just because they are FDA approved, doesn't mean they are safe!

Fortunately we have very safe, effective and convenient alternatives to synthetic hormones. Bio-identical hormones are not only "natural"; bio-identical means they are EXACTLY like the hormones we used to produce. They bind to our bodies' hormone receptors EXACTLY like the hormones we used to produce. They DO NOT increase our risk of cancer, stroke, blood clots nor heart attacks. As a matter of fact, bio-identical hormones are protective against these things! Specifically testosterone replacement does not cause prostate cancer in men! The French Cohort Study published in 2002 followed 3,175 postmenopausal women taking bio-identical hormones for 9 years, proving there was no increased risk of breast cancer. There are many more studies out there proving the same facts. Most of us have heard about bio-identical creams, which are very safe. Bio-identical hormone pellets are another safe, effective, convenient alternative I provide at Sei Bella Med Spa! I personally have been getting pellets for almost 7 years. I love them!

The process is simple. You come in for an office visit with me and I take a complete medical history. You have a panel of lab drawn. When that lab is available in about a week, it is entered into the HTCA computer formula, along with your medical history and symptoms. A dose of hormones is then generated which I can adjust as I need to. The prescription is then sent to Well's Pharmacy who then ships your pellets to you that have been calculated specifically for you. The pellets, which are the size of a grain of rice and smaller, are then inserted by me into the fat of your bottom in a quick, painless in-office procedure. It truly takes all of 2-3 minutes to insert them. Your pellets will last 4-6 months and gradually dissolve. When symptoms return, you know it's time to tell me you are ready to be repelleted. Bio-identical hormone pellets are safe, convenient and effective, not to mention healthy! And although this blog has mostly focused on menopause, pellets are very popular in men as well!

Lumenis IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Therapy

The Science

A recent study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology shows IPL treatments actually reverse the genetic expression patterns of aged human skin!  After the IPL treatment regimen, the skin’s genes were actually “rejuvenated”. Patients who receive a series of 3-6 treatments and then do a yearly maintenance of three treatments have astounding results! You will soon realize why IPL is a staple in many of our patients' skin care regimens. PREVENTATIVE, CORRECTIVE, & DRAMATIC! We are extremely pleased with our new IPL machine, the Lumenis M-22. It's more powerful than our previous device, so you need fewer treatments and the M-22 is equipped with a unique cooling plate for maximum comfort.

The Difference

Unlike laser treatments, the light from IPL penetrates all levels of the skin by emitting many different wavelengths. Lasers are limited to one wavelength, which restricts its penetration abilities, and limits its treatment options. IPL (intense pulsed light) offers an extensive range of wavelengths to treat different conditions and has a sapphire crystal cooling tip to further increase patient comfort.
IPL delivers results without blisters, burns or a long recovery period. And as long as you wear sunscreen and protect your skin you can go right back to your activities after a treatment is complete.

Treatable Conditions

  • Acne -Now, you can clear inflammatory acne without any discomfort or downtime. Acne Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments utilize a high intensity light source to penetrate through the tissue and destroy acne bacteria quickly and easily, inhibiting future acne breakouts . Typically, just 4 -6 treatments over a two month period will greatly improve the appearance of skin as well as even out skin tone and stimulate collagen production. You will notice a considerable reduction or elimination in the appearance of your acne. Moreover, the skin appears replenished and rejuvenated with a more even skin tone and texture. Medical grade peels are an excellent complementary treatment to assist in clearing up acne as well as blue LED light trestments. You will need a good skin care regimen to maintain your results.
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles-IPL photofacial rejuvenation, offers a safe and gentle way to stimulate superficial collagen production, reduce surface wrinkles and other signs of aging, resulting in smoother, more wrinkle-free looking skin. These changes are not seen immediately. Your skin improves over a few months after you finish your treatment series.  Medical peels are the perfect complement to your IPL treatment. Matched to your skin type, a peel will improve the texture of your skin and create a more youthful appearance.
  • Age Spots-IPL with the M-22 lightens and removes "sun spots", "age spots",  and brown blotches on the face, neck, chest, hands and other areas of the body. After an IPL series, any age and sun spots not removed and brought to the surface can be followed with a Perfect Derma Peel to reveal younger, smoother, clearer skin!
  • Rosacea-a chronic skin condition that makes your face turn red and may cause swelling and blemishes that look like acne. IPL is considered to be the gold standard for the treatment of this condition and our results agree. Unfortunately we can't cure rosacea, but we can treat it very effectively. Epionce intensive noursishing cream along with a good sunscreen, helps reduce the redness as well.
  • Broken Capillaries -Dilated, visible and ‘broken’ facial and nasal capillaries are very common and often present a problem as they give the appearance of sunburn,  or of excessive alcohol intake. Often they are inherited, and they are certainly more common in lighter skin types, and with long-term sun exposure. They are surprisingly easy to treat with  IPL and we have had great results doing so.
  • Hyperpigmentation- there are a number of reasons why a person might experience hyperpigmentation on their face or body, including hormones, medication, certain skin diseases, photo damage or even just the natural aging process. If your pigmentation is a source of embarrassment for you, you may want to consider IPL. IPL helps to neutralize and reduce the pigmented areas while minimizing any damage caused to the surrounding tissue. We can recommend complementary products like the Epionce Melanolyte treatment duo that will help prevent these dark areas from reoccuring.
  • Sun Damage- IPL is Dr. Trussell's favorite treatment for sun damage. IPL is a non-invasive skin restoration treatment that erases the damage inflicted on your skin from sun and aging. The technology supplies a broad spectrum of light which reaches deep down within the skin, targeting pigment and vascular imperfections. The goals of therapy are a more even skin tone and texture. Compliment your IPL photofacial with a medical grade Perfect Derma Peel and help remove any sunspots that may be left to reveal younger, smoother, clearer skin.
  • Spider Veins on the Extremities-intense pulse light therapy is an excellent non-invasive treatment for spider veins, and small vascular birthmarks. Intense Pulsed Light delivers a concentrated pulse of light to the vein to be treated. The light generates heat and specifically damages the vessel walls. As a result, the veins shrink and disappear. Intense Pulsed Light penetrates the unwanted vessel without damaging or scarring the surrounding tissue.
  • Telangiectasias on the face-  are widened venules (tiny blood vessels) that cause red lines or patterns on the skin. Their formation is gradual. Telangiectases are common in very visible areas (lips, nose, fingers, around the eyes and mouth). They can cause discomfort and look unattractive. IPL reduces the appearance of the red marks or patterns on the skin. IPL penetrates the vessel forcing it to collapse.
  • Hair Removal-remove body hair permanently or almost permanently. IPL zeros in on the hair follicles and kills them. However, hair grows in cycles and some follicles are lying dormant. Light therapy must hit the hair follicle during its growth phase to work properly which means you will need a series of treatments to obtain the best results.  A better option for hair removal at Sei Bella Med Spa is with our LightSheer Desire laser hair removal device!

Are You a candidate for IPL?

You may not be a good candidate for IPL therapy if you are prone to developing red, raised keloid scars or other forms of excess scarring, hyperpigmentation, or hypopigmentation. You are also not a good candidate for intense pulsed light therapy if you do not heal well from burns or if you have uncontrolled diabetes, as this disease may affect your body's wound-healing ability. Autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, may also prevent you from receiving IPL. Discuss appropriate treatments with Dr. Trussell. She, or her nurse Sandy, will examine your skin and any scars you have. You may need to have a patch test to see how you react to IPL.

Cost for IPL depends on the area being treated, and the type of treatment being provided. Make sure you are clear about all price points before you begin your IPL treatment series. We are available to answer any questions you may have. See pricing below.

Call us today to schedule your IPL treatments. Dr. Trussell and Sandy look forward to working with you to provide the best individualized care for your skin problems.

Coming Soon! Oxygeneo 3- in-1 Super Facial!

We are very excited to announce that in July we will be adding new lasers and the Oxygeneo facial!

This second blog in a series discusses our new Oxygeneo facial:

The geneO+ is a new platform that redefines how we do facial treatments with the combined innovative OxyGeneo and ultrasound technologies. One device, one treatment to exfoliate, oxygenate, and infuse.

Exfoliate: A Capsugen tablet exfoliates the upper skin layer to remove dead cells, smooth and renew the skin.

Infuse:  And this Capsugen action prepares the skin to receive active nutrients.

Oxygenate: After infusion of nutrients, carbon dioxide bubbles are produced that gently burst on the skin sending oxygen rich blood to the treated areas. This process increases capillary blood flow and increases the skin's metabolism.

Ultrasound: finally we use ultrasound waves to penetrate below the surface of the skin. The ultrasound vibrations increase the permeability of the upper layer of the skin which is generally not very permeable at all. This even further assists the skin in absorbing essential ingredients.

How many treatments will you need?
We did our demo session on a current patient of ours who has significant rosacea and was currently having a flare. She noticed improvement immediately! To get the best results, though, you are going to want to do a series of treatments. Our aesthetician, Monica, will advise you on how many you need based on the severity of the condition you're trying to correct.

What can you expect after a treatment? Any downtime?
After your Oygeneo 3- in-1 facial your skin is going to feel so refreshed and rejuvenated! The treatment doesn't hurt and there is no downtime! You can resume your daily routine immediately. However, it's very important to use quality skincare products, like Epionce, to maintain your results.

Can any skin tone have an Oxygeneo facial?
Yes! Oxygeneo can benefit all skin types and tones!

How long will a treatment take?
Usually the treatment takes 30 minutes after your consult, your face is cleaned and a good skin evaluation is done.

We look forward to seeing you soon! 501-228-6237

New Laser Hair Removal Coming to Sei Bella Med Spa in July!

We are very excited to announce that in July we will be adding new lasers and the Oygeneo facial!

This first blog in a series will discuss laser hair removal:

We will be able to offer hair removal with our new LightSheer laser! Many of you have asked for laser hair removal, but everyone always complains about how much it hurts. I actually had a treatment on my legs and underarms with the Lumenis LightSheer and it was very comfortable! During the demo we actually had to turn the power up because I have coarse, dark hair. And the whole thing only took 10 minutes!

The Lumenis LightSheer is 75% faster than the average hair reduction session, and what makes it so comfortable are the unique HIT and ChillTip technologies that greatly increase comfort. The HIT technology incorporates suction to elevate and stretch the skin. This causes maximum absorption into the hair follicles and fast coverage of large areas. The ChillTip uses a proprietary cooling system that momentarily numbs the skin which decreases discomfort as well.

Multiple treatments are required to achieve permanent hair reduction. (NOTHING removes 100% of hair FOREVER). We have to treat the hair follicle in the early growth phase of the hair (anagen phase). Not all hairs are in the same phase at a given time, thus the reason multiple treatments are needed. Usually 4-6 treatments achieve excellent results.

The appearance of the treated area varies from person to person. During the treatment, some hairs shed from their follicles immediately, while remaining ones will shed in the following weeks. A little swelling and redness around the hair follicle may appear immediately after the treatment and this is a GOOD sign indicating the treatment is working. My legs looked like they had a small a small amount of razor burn for about 12 hours, but absolutely no discomfort! And I can already tell a difference after one treatment!

Stay tuned for the exact date in July that we will start! You can call us to be added to the list of the first ones we schedule! 501-228-6237

Epionce Lytic Tx Products Reduce Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Sebaceous hyperplasia is hypertrophy (overgrowth) of the entire sebaceous gland. These lesions are benign, but bothersome, and can become severe. They are characterized by yellowish papules, and sometimes actual nodules on the forehead, nose and cheeks. They are most common in middle aged, elderly and acne-prone people. There haven't been a lot of available treatments other than topical retinoids (think retin-A) which tend to dry the skin out and cause aggravating flaking.

However, a recent study has shown that the Epionce skincare products, Lytic Tx and Lite Lytic Tx have been very effective in treating sebaceous hyperplasia. A controlled clinical trial done with human volunteers (Epionce never does animal testing) showed visible improvement or complete resolution of the lesions. Epionce products are botanical based. The Lytic Tx products have keratolytic activity (meaning they break up these nodules and papules) and prevent the release and activation of inflammatory factors in the skin.

Epionce products do not contain teas, soy, vitamins, retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids or traditional antioxidants. They are formulated for elderly, infant, atopic and sensitive skin, individuals with outdoor lifetstyle and occupations, including those that live in harsh environments and climates. Despite their effectiveness, they are very well tolerated with only a .01% sensitivity rate across the brand. Give us a call today.....501-228-6237
