1. What is ArteFill?
ArteFill is an injectable filler for the correction of wrinkles in the face. It has also been used to replace volume loss in the hands. It contains 20% tiny, round, non-resorbable and smooth particles (PMMA microspheres) and 80% purified bovine collagen gel with 0.3% lidocaine, an aesthetic.
2. How does ArteFill work?
ArteFill is a dual-acting injectable wrinkle filler. First, ArteFill visibly corrects the wrinkle. Then the microspheres provide the support your skin needs for wrinkle correction.
3. How does ArteFill differ from temporary fillers?
All other fillers are eventually absorbed by the body. ArteFill is different. The unique microspheres in ArteFill are not absorbed by the body. These microspheres provide the support your skin needs for wrinkle correction.
4. How long does an ArteFill treatment take?
A typical ArteFill treatment only takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
5. Is ArteFill safe?
Yes, ArteFill is FDA approved and proven to be a safe and effective filler for wrinkles. It is estimated that over 300,000 syringes have been distributed globally since its US launch in 2007 and there have been NO product recalls.
6. Is one treatment enough to get the look I want?
Most people get the results they want with 1 to 3 treatments, depending on the depth of their wrinkles and folds. When you have your followup appointment in 4 to 6 weeks, you can decide if you would like to further enhance your results.
7. Are the injections painful?
ArteFill is formulated with an anesthetic (lidocaine) for patient comfort. For additional comfort, we can numb the treatment area with a topical anesthetic, but this is usually not necessary.
8. Are there any side effects?
As with all dermal fillers, side effects may occur. During your initial consultation, Dr. Trussell will go over your individualized treatment plan and provide you with any information you may need. Most common side effects with any filler include a small amount of bruising, swelling or very rarely tiny lumps.
9. What are microspheres?
The biocompatible microspheres in ArteFill are made up of Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), which have been used in medical applications for over 60 years. The microspheres create a microscopic "matrix" to support your body's own natural collagen production, and ultimately strengthen the layers of the skin.
10. Is a skin test required before treatment with ArteFill?
Not necessarily, but it is certainly available. The skin test is a safety precaution to ensure you are not allergic to the bovine (beef) collagen or lidocaine in ArteFill. Dr. Trussell is terribly allergic to beef, and she did not have a reaction to the skin test. At this point she has also had ArteFill injected in her chin and has not had any type of adverse reaction.
